Making the Most of Your Reach-in Closet: Organization and Design Tips

A walk-in closet is easy to organize, but what if you simply don’t have that kind of space? Some homes and apartments were just not built for walk-in closets, and if that describes your home, you’ll have to find a way for you and your reach-in closet to peacefully coexist. Fortunately, we have some suggestions.

  • Use the door- or lose it. If you like being able to close off the closet, make sure you’re taking advantage of every possible bit of space, including the door. You can attach racks or hooks, to make it an additional storage space. If you’re not averse to ditching the doors, you can remove them and you’ll instantly have more room to store bulky items or install closet furnishings that wouldn’t fit with the doors open. If you still like the closed off look, consider a curtain.
  • Adding a dresser is a quick organizational fix. A short dresser inside a closet gives a surface and storage while using only previously underutilized space. A dresser is a great place to keep clothes that can be folded, but if you have different things that need to be stored, don’t be afraid to use drawers for things that aren’t necessarily clothes, like hats or scarves. Use all your available space however it works for you, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
  • Find spaces outside your closet to use for storage. Is there anything taking up closet space that can be displayed? Do you have space in your room that could easily store some of your things?  Look at the room creatively, to find new ways to stash things.
  • Invest in a custom-built closet. Perhaps the best solution is to have your closet outfitted with a closet system designed especially for you. Today’s closet systems come in many styles and configuration, so whether you want elegant wooden cabinetry or simply some wire racks and shelves, you’ll be able to find what you need to keep your closet organized and neat.

At Bay Home and Window, we offer custom designed closet systems designed for any closet. Bay Home & Window partners with Costco. Not only did the Costco collaboration help to give us confidence in the quality of Bay Home & Window, but we also got a great deal on our purchase of window coverings for our whole house! We're very happy with the quality of the product and the high-quality installation work. The window coverings look great.

We had cellular shades installed and it was just want we needed! Finally, we can block out the sun that is just merciless this time of year. I can tell the quality is superb, and install was painless. We had originally ordered light filtering shades and then discovered that it still made the rooms too bright. Bay Home made it easy and affordable to reorder the replacements. They really want us to enjoy our home. Thank you Bay Home & Windows!

Years ago we bought custom wood shutters throughout our home from Bay Home & Window. We had a great experience and our shutters still look great. Recently we remodeled our closet and had them back to create a custom closet. I had no idea how much we could love a closet. Everyone at Bay Home and Window was easy to work with they helped us figure out the design and utilized every inch of our odd sized space. From appointment scheduling to installation everyone was very professional and exceeded our expectations.
