Finding the Right Shutters for Your Home

Are you looking for window coverings that are elegant, unique, and effective? You may want to consider shutters. Shutters offer a look that’s sophisticated, yet versatile enough to fit with any décor. How do you know which kind of shutters is right for you?

One reason plantation shutters are so popular is that they let in a lot of light, and allow you to keep the view open to the outside if you so choose. Plantation shutters can be customized to fit your décor and window shape, which is another advantage. Some shutters can even have a divider rail in the middle.  This configuration allows maximum versatility in adjusting your shutters for privacy and lighting, so it’s very popular in bathrooms. Whichever style of shutter you choose, you’ll have to decide on materials. Shutters are typically made of vinyl, wood, or composite, in a variety of configurations and price points.

  • Vinyl shutters are the least expensive option. Within the category of vinyl shutters, though, the options break down further. There’s hollow vinyl, which has size limitations because the hollow framed louvers can’t support much weight. These tend to sag over time, so they’re not as widely used as some of the other vinyl options. Structured hollow vinyl has more structural integrity than regular hollow vinyl, but solid vinyl is even stronger because the vinyl frame is filled with blown PVC. If you’re looking for a stronger shutter, you might choose solid vinyl with an aluminum insert or, better yet, vinyl clad wood. Vinyl clad wood shutters are strong and durable, and the vinyl coating makes them more moisture resistant than traditional wood shutters.
  • Composite plantation shutters are sometimes referred to as engineered wood or faux wood shutters. Consisting of MDF wrapped in a vinyl or PVC coating, they’re and moisture-resistant, and offer an affordable alternative to real wood shutters.   These shutters have limited application and should only be used in small window openings and can have a tendency to sag.
  • Wood shutters are the gold standard of plantation shutters. They’re light, strong, and can be painted or stained, which is not possible with vinyl or composite shutters.  This shutter option is optimal because they are made of the lightest and strongest material and are the best choice for large and specialty shapes.

We had cellular shades installed and it was just want we needed! Finally, we can block out the sun that is just merciless this time of year. I can tell the quality is superb, and install was painless. We had originally ordered light filtering shades and then discovered that it still made the rooms too bright. Bay Home made it easy and affordable to reorder the replacements. They really want us to enjoy our home. Thank you Bay Home & Windows!

Years ago we bought custom wood shutters throughout our home from Bay Home & Window. We had a great experience and our shutters still look great. Recently we remodeled our closet and had them back to create a custom closet. I had no idea how much we could love a closet. Everyone at Bay Home and Window was easy to work with they helped us figure out the design and utilized every inch of our odd sized space. From appointment scheduling to installation everyone was very professional and exceeded our expectations.
