The Different Kinds of Blinds That You Can Buy for Your Home

Mar 04, 2020

Different Types of BlindsBlinds are the most popular type of window covering, and it is easy to see why. They are incredibly versatile and can, not only enhance the appearance of your windows and home, but also increase your privacy, light-filtering control, and, in some cases, even your energy efficiency. Before investing in new blinds for your home, you should be aware of the many different types available on the market today—each offering their own unique style and benefits.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are a classic choice; in fact, they are the most popular style of blinds. They have horizontal slats—suspended by cords or wide strips of cloth called tapes—that can rotate in unison nearly 180 degrees to control how much light filters in. As Venetian slats are raised, the bottom slat is pressed into the slat above it.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds have individual slats that run along a track at the top of the blind and are ideal for wide windows and open areas. Depending on the style, they can either be opened from side to side or by parted in the middle. Either way, they are very easy to operate and provide excellent light and privacy control.

Mini & Micro Blinds

Mini blinds are similar in operation to Venetian blinds, but they feature slats than are much smaller in width—typically 1-inch thick. As you’ve probably guessed, micro blinds are even smaller, with slates that are ½-inch thick.

Panel Blinds

Panel blinds are ideal for covering patio doors, sliding glass doors, or oversized windows. They feature large fabric panels that slide back and forth on a multi-channel track for easy operation and have the ability to stack completely clear of the door or window when in an open position.

Materials

Furthermore, blinds are not only available in different styles, but in a wide range of materials as well, including:

  • Wood – On the pricier side, these blinds provide all of the sophistication, durability, and strength that wood brings. However, they are not ideal for places with high-humidity, as the moisture may cause the wood to warp over time.
  • Faux wood – If you love the undeniable elegance of wood but not the drawbacks, you may be interested in faux wood. A synthetic composite of wood and plastic particles, faux wood is unaffected by moisture, making it a happy medium between the look of wood and durability of vinyl.
  • Vinyl – Vinyl is a synthetic polymer material that is incredibly resistant to wear and tear, regardless of your environment. Vinyl blinds are more affordable than other types of blinds, easy to maintain, and can be customized to suit a wide range of aesthetic tastes.
  • Exotic wood – Bamboo blinds provide a charmingly bohemian appearance. They are environmentally friendly and especially well-suited for warm climates.
